The Distinguished Wisconsin Aviator has, through words and/or deeds, provided leadership and inspiration to his peers and future generations of aviators. This award recognizes his or her accomplishments in furthering the interest in aviation, to the young and old people alike that make up our aviation system.

Thomas P. Poberezny • 2007
President, Experimental Aircraft Association
Tom Poberezny was first elected president of EAA in 1989. An accomplished aviator in his own right, Poberezny was a member of the U.S. National Unlimited Aerobatic Team that captured the World Championship in 1972. The following year, he won the U.S. National Unlimited Aerobatic Championship. He subsequently flew for 25 years as wing of the legendary Eagles Aerobatic Team, the most successful civilian precision flying team in history. He has been chairman of the annual EAA AirVenture Fly-In Convention for more than 25 years. During that time, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, as it is now known, has grown to be the world’s largest annual general aviation event, attracting an attendance of 650,000 from 70 nations and 10,000 airplanes for one spectacular week every summer. At present he is President/CEO, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). He resides in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Major General Fred R. Sloan • 2006
Major General Fred R. Sloan is Wisconsin’s deputy adjutant general for air. He is responsible to the adjutant general for directing Wisconsin’s 2,200-member Air National Guard and establishing policy to ensure mission readiness of an air refueling wing, fighter wing, air control squadron and a combat readiness training center. His is also responsible for coordination, implementation and compliance with Air Force and National Guard Bureau policies within the state. Gen. Sloan was born in Milwaukee and graduated from Marquette University high school in 1966. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1970. His military education includes the United States Air Force Staff Officers School in 1975, Air Command and Staff College in 1979, and the National Defense University’s National Security Management Course in 1985.
Brigadier General Richard R. "Ric" Severson • 2005

Brigadier General Richard "Ric" Severson is Commander of the 459th Air Refueling Wing, Air Force Reserve, Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, the only Air Force Reserve unit in the greater Washington, D.C. area. The general manages more than 1,300 reservists and eight KC-135R aircraft

NASA Astronaut Jeffrey N. Williams (Colonel, USA) • 2004

Astronaut Williams is from winter, Wisconsin. He joined NASA in 1987. He served as mission specialist and flight engineer on STS-101 and logged on 236 hours in Space, including 6 hours and 44 minutes of EVA. He served as Co-chair of the Space Shuttle Cockpit council and on temp assignment at NASA Headquarters in support of legislative affairs. William is currently training to command a future long-duration expedition to the International Space Station.

General Albert H. Wilkening • 2003

This year's recipient of the Distinguished Wisconsin Aviator Award is General Albert H. Wilkening. General Wilkening is a highly decorated command pilot with more than 3,300 flying hours in the numerous aircraft. He is currently the Adjutant General of Wisconsin responsible for both the federal and state missions of the Wisconsin Army and Air National Guard and Wisconsin Division of Emergency Management.
